If you're only going to have one kid . . .

consider having the kiddo when you're 30.

For whatever reason, the maternal age of 30 is statistically the ideal age for having children that are less frail, less obese, taller, and have better self reported health later on in life.

That said, we're quite the fans of our little Christian and Simeon (born at my maternal age of 24 and 26) and don't mind if they turn out to be sickly short chunkers later on, so long as they laugh as easily then as they do now.

What do you know? I am probably only going to have one kid and she was born when I was 30. No wonder she's so darn healthy and spunky :) (I'm not sure where the height thing went...) But I would take two, less healthy kids if they laughed that sweetly together. So cute!

So, is this really it, or does it just so happen that 1) people nowadays are having children later in life (closer to age 30), and 2)nowadays kids are getting more hormones, nutrients, and vitamins than they used to and so are growing bigger (for example, first generation Asian children in the USA seem to be substantially taller than their parents, something Nate things is because of the added nutrients they are getting here). Perhaps you could look at this trend in non-western-civilizations and see if it remains the same. Just thoughts from your friendly, bored, mom. :) I'll probably regret saying anything later, so you can just ignore me if you want. you know I am just being a skeptic, right?

He does control for most of these issues, but it would be interesting to see what it is like internationally.

I'll probably have our first baby when I'm 30 (I'm 28 now but we are saving our pennies to go to Utah in August...so if I got pregnant now, I couldn't get on the plane in August to go home. After our trip, we'll try and start a family. I'll turn 29 in December. So I could very well have our first baby when I'm 29 or 30) Interesting blog post. Thanks for sharing. :)

That being said the older you get the older your eggs get. Older women have a higher chance of having a child with down's syndrome. I believe it starts sky-rocketing when you hit 35. Just saying :-)
