Cranney Family Dynamics Evolution

First words. They're often unclear or confused with babbling, but anticipated by every parent eager to catch a glimpse into the mind and soul of their little one and perhaps their own parenting. It's almost seen as a rite into personhood, or at least personality. Christian's first word? "Jesus". Simeon's "Uh-oh". Joshua's? "No, no, no!" accompanied by hand motions waving back and forth. Yup, looks like our parenting has only gotten worse with each child, sorry any future children; you're probably doomed to curse words for your speaking debut.

There is always so much control we seem to have over the first one without siblings getting in the way to complicate things. I think you're OK as long as they don't say something vulgar for their first word!. (I've been in houses where a little one let out a very vulgar word, and the parents were pretty embarrassed because the child was obviously parroting something they'd heard.)

In the meantime, I think that "no, no, no" reminds me of the "Just Say No" campaign, showing a strength of character to reject something unseemly when it comes around.

Your blog reminds me of once when Becca and Carl were really young, and the four of us were traveling in the car. A car suddenly pulled out in front of us and Charles had to slam on the brakes. We heard Carl's little voice from his car seat say, "What in the hell is he doing?" I swallowed hard as Charles turned to look at me with raised eyebrows. Obviously, Carl had been paying closer attention to mutterings than I thought...
